Frequently asked questions

How to choose the right DT series 12v refrigertor?

The DT series offers three sizes: Setpower DT35 (37QT), Setpower DT45 (48QT) and Setpower DT55 (59QT) 12v refrigerator. All 3 models have the same length and width, but the height varies. It's recommended to leave 1-2 inches of extra space for easy placement.

What is the energy consumption of the DT series car refrigerator?

The DT series car fridge consumes 38-50 watts, which is normal. Power usage is higher when the 12 volt fridge starts up but will drop once it reaches the set temperature.

How do I turn off one compartment of the DT series electric cooler to save energy?

When both compartments are running, press and hold the temperature increase button and the temperature decrease button of one compartment at the same time. This will turn off that compartment.

Why does the display show "888" briefly after plugging in the 12 volt refrigerator?

This is a normal phenomenon. The brief display of "888" indicates that the car freezer has powered on successfully. To start using the fridge, simply press and hold the power button for 3-5 seconds, and the car fridge will begin its normal operation.

What is the purpose of the magnetic metal plate included in the fridge package?

The portable refrigerator comes equipped with a magnetic-ready metal plate, enabling seamless attachment of compatible magnetic accessories such as the Setpower PG216 Magnetic Battery Pack.

This dual-zone car fridge/freezer receives praise for its spacious capacity, efficient cooling, and quiet operation. Customers said it "cools down fast" and maintains temperature well with low power consumption. The dual compartment feature allowing simultaneous fridge/freezer use is highly valued. Some concerns include missing baskets, latch durability issues, and occasional compressor noise.

Have owned for a DT45 over a year bouncing around in my 1 ton truck always plugged in and has been the best investment. It now lives in my garage as I'm building it to keep drinks cool. Just bought another RF25 with a battery to put in my other vehicle.

Setpower RV45D

So I’m actually writing about the Setpower RV45D, and I have to say it’s still running strong. I was hesitant to buy at first as I never heard of Setpower at the time. But I couldn’t justify the price tag on other brands. So I gave it a try and went with Setpower. I have used it when traveling for work and would keep in my hotel rooms as it was more reliable than the hotel room mini fridges. Also it was great for when I was living out of my car (by choice) for a few years. I have had this Setpower fridge running since the day I bought it in 2023 for all my adventures and living situations. I still use it in my Subaru to this day. I will definitely be looking at getting another for when I build a van. By far one of my favorite pieces of gear I keep in my car. Highly recommend for anyone looking to keep fresh food cold while out adventuring.

Product first thoughts.

Nice looking cooler, overall first impressions excited to use for camping. Time will tell on the durability. However Horrible shipping provider cause product damage in shipping! Wish setpower offered a insulated cover for the RV65 cooler.

Exceeds Our Expectations

This fridge has worked awesome for us. Purchased ours in September did a week long trip to Big Horn Mountians in Wyoming and just got back from a trip to North West Arkansas's Ozark Mountians and Buffalo River area. It has ran 24/7 each time when we were out. Absolutely love this fridge!!!!

Jon

It’s fantastic to hear that your portable refrigerator has performed so well on your trips to the Big Horn Mountains and the Ozarks! Running 24/7 with ease makes it a reliable car cooler and perfect for long camping adventures. Whether you're using it as a 12v fridge in your vehicle or for RV camping, it's definitely a great investment for keeping food fresh. Can't wait to hear how it holds up on your next adventure!

Great fridge freezer Camping

I use the freezer/fridge for eight days camping out of the car. A100 W solar panel and a little solar generator 300 watt to keep it running. It made it through the heat of the day and still was able to recharge the generator battery to get me through the night.
The lids were good too because we had a raccoon problem. They didn’t even seem to bother it, but they did try to open everything else. The deeper section was great. It really held a lot of food. I I brought along. I guess those are 2 quart size square type paper milk containers three fit perfectly in the width. Which is also the same width as a carton of eggs. So the volume size proportions is very efficient for stacking lots of food in there.

So glad to hear this portable freezer worked so well for your 8-day camping trip! It's awesome that your solar fridge setup with the 100W panel provided uninterrupted power. It sounds like an ideal 12v refrigerator for any outdoor adventure. Thanks for sharing your experience

Great Product!

I've been running mine for almost three years now, two in a jeep and one year in the back of my truck. This thing holds up great and would recommend it to anyone. Just need to get a slide for easier use.

Car Camping Use

My intention for the fridge unit was mainly for camping out of my truck. I ran a 12v circuit directly from the engine battery to the rear of the truck bed with a cigarette lighter adapter to plug into. Using the 12v adapter plug, it cooled and cycled normally and reached my temperature settings fairly quickly and operated as it should, especially when the engine was running. After 6-8 hours of not running the engine, the voltage sensor (set to low) would trip it into fault E1 for insufficient line voltage. The truck battery was never below 11.5 volts, so my assumption is that the fridge’s voltage sensor is overly sensitive, but after running the engine for a while it kicks back on normally and keeps running. I might try some type of hard wired connection and see if that makes a difference or not, but all in all I’m happy with the unit.

Thank you for sharing your detailed setup and experience. It's great to hear this 12v refrigerator cools quickly and works perfectly as your truck fridge while driving. The voltage sensor is designed to protect your vehicle's battery, and a hardwired connection may provide more stable performance. We're glad it's been a reliable camping refrigerator for your needs!

more capacity, dual zone, with refinements

Long time SetPower customer (bought and still use an RV45S back in 2021/2022, bought a PT55 in 2023. Now in 2025 I’ve picked up this RV65D).

My PT55 experienced a failure (temperature sensor) and I was in need of a replacement. I was pleased to discover that my favorite RV-series style now had a new, larger capacity AND came in dual-zone, the perfect replacement for my PT55.

I like the deep trench in the freezer- I have a couple large ice packs that fit there perfectly.

Baskets in the fridge zone to stack items, making the best of the space available.

I like that the control panels are now located on the front of the unit, power connection on the side. This feels more convenient to me.

As always, 12/24V DC, so I can plug it directly into my solar battery.

And, next to the lid switch/light in each zone looks to be, could it be? A mounted DHT11 or DHT22 humidity and temperature sensor? That would make the temperature sensors much easier to replace on this model (that’s what did my PT55 in, and they’re not exposed like this is). If so: I really really like that.

Oh: it has drainage plugs! In both zones. That’s new to me (coming from the RV45S and PT55). That’s a nice addition too.

Excited to try out the Anderson power connector at some point. That seems like a nice option to have (of course, I don’t presently HAVE any Anderson connectivity- just XT60 and DC barrel connectors, with a thought towards trying out SAE).

If I had to list cons: it seems a bit noisier. Maybe due to the standard compressor have more space to cool. Maybe it is a larger capacity compressor, and therefore has a bit more oomph. Just something to be aware of.

The exposed temperature sensor, while great, also seems to impact proper temperature sensing if blocked. I found my RV65D compressor on almost constantly as it was trying and failing to detect adequate temperature. Be mindful of that- give it some space and it seems happier. This is something that should be mentioned in the manual (I didn’t recall encountering such).

Maybe it is these recent weeks, being hot and humid, since I’ve received and put the fridge in use, but a lot of condensation seems to form between the fridge and lids (both zones). This results in some freezing (thin layer, like a jagged line, of ice) on the freezer side, so every day I take a paper town and wipe it down.

All in all, compared to my RV45S that I bought 3-4 years ago, the RV65D is a welcome upgrade all around (the RV45S is still plugging alone, working fine).

Compared to the PT55? The PT55 is TALL- I prefer the larger footprint of the RV65D and less height. Maybe others would prefer otherwise. Something to keep in mind.

I’m a fan of fewer moving parts and electronic doo-dads. I see SetPower has some app-driven (DT?) series of fridges, which I’ll never touch, not even with a 10 foot pole. Give me as few, but manual, buttons as possible, please.

The PT55 has plastic latches, something that likely will break with use over time.

The RV45S and RV65D have metal latches mounted on the outside, with mounting screws visible (and no foolery with the screw head type). So, even if the metal latch broke, I could replace it. The PT55 would seem more problematic in that regard.

So, the RV-series from SetPower (and the RV65D) is highly regarded by me. I hope both my fridges continue to offer me years of reliable service.

Suggestion for possible improvement: have a button to toggle the displays on and off. As it is, I cover the displays with black electrical tape to block out the piercing green light, which gives off too much light pollution for me at night. If I could just turn the displays off when I didn’t need them, that would be super-useful. Even if it is some button combo as currently exists for things like switching temperature or selectively enabling/disabling zones.

Keep the RV series simple, please! I don’t want wifi-connectivity. I don’t want an app. This is a beautiful product and series of fridge.

Thank you so much for your detailed review and continued trust in the SetPower RV-series! We're thrilled to hear that the RV65D has been a perfect upgrade, providing the larger capacity and dual-zone features you were looking for in a 12v fridge freezer. It's great to know that the deep freezer trench, baskets for stacking, and front-facing control panel have all been beneficial for your use, especially for car life and overlanding adventures.

We truly appreciate your insights on the exposed temperature sensors and drainage plugs, and we'll certainly keep those in mind for future improvements. Your suggestion regarding the display toggle is excellent, and we’ll make sure to pass it along to our design team.

As always, it’s great to hear how well the RV65D fits with your solar-powered setup and how it works seamlessly with your portable refrigerator needs. We’re glad to know that the RV series continues to offer you reliable service, and we’re sure your RV65D will serve you well for years to come.

We also appreciate your recommendation to keep things simple—our goal is to provide high-quality, durable, and easy-to-use products for car fridges, overlanding, and camper fridge needs. Feel free to share your experiences with friends who might be interested in a 12 volt cooler, whether for fishing trips, RV life, or solo adventures. Thank you again for your support!

Dream come true

I've been dreaming and planning for years, the day I could finally get a setpower fridge for my truck. I still can't believe I own one even though it sits in front of me beautiful in its thermal case. Works perfect..a little too perfect! Still dialing into the temps that work best. Accidentally froze a couple things in the fridge section haha but this unit is a beast with the deep freezing. It's so slick too with so much room inside, I couldn't even find enough stuff to put in it! It's actually way bigger than i imagined on the inside compared to how much space it takes up.
The sound it makes is quiet like a small fish tank bubbling which makes a great white noise kinda sound for sleeping.
It's solid, well made and light for being a fridge. I have a spine problem, but even I can lift this unit empty with no issue. Best to use two people to lift though.
I love how secure the lids latch and open and work well with the thermal case on. It's obvious when the lid is properly closed with a "snap" of the latch, sealing the cold inside.
Love it!!
Love the warranty policy!
I want another one already!

Works excellent

Used it on our first trip with the camper and it was perfect.

Everything worked perfectly, watch the power cord with the slide!

I installed the unit on the slide in the garage area of a promaster van, the footprint was almost the same as the cooler I carry. It fired up and I ran it for 48 hours empty checking the temperature every few hours with a laser thermometer and verifying it with the temp on the fridge, after a few hours it was stable and only a 2 degree difference between the laser and actual unit, I don't think you can ask for much better than that! I hard wired the unit in to my house electric and really had to play with the placement of the cord as the slide worked with the fridge, I was worried about it being pinched as the fridge retracted. I solved the issue by affixing it to the garage floor with some cable loops and used a small bungee to keep it pulled away from any pinch points. I'm so thrilled not to have to by ice anymore!

Been running this frig

We have been using this frig for over a year non-stop. For the most part off of DC power, sometimes on AC power. Never had an issue and is running as the first day we turned it on. I don't see why to pay more for a DC Frig-Freezer.

Awesome

This Setpower PT55 12v refrigerator/freezer is simply awesome.
This has survived being rained on so many times that I thought it would die.
I ran it last year for 185 straight days in the back of my Ford F-150.

I would recommend this to anyone and everyone.

Pretty *cool* little unit

Arrived in a somewhat strange state, but I was able to figure out how to put the parts and pieces on it without much struggle. I bought it on a fathers day sale so it came with the zip up cover, which I think is a good deal for the added thermal efficiency. Only complaint is you cant use the cover with the wheels and extending handle. Given that you're not supposed to be tipping these over and flooding liquid into the compressor, this is probably for the best anyway. The compressor is actually very quiet, and the unit easily maintains temps in my house. I expect it to do just fine out in the desert heat too. I put it on my ecoflow river 2 and it pulls a peak of about 70w but settled closer to 60w on the max setting, with about 40-50w on the eco setting.

It feels smaller than I thought it would be with the divider in place and the baskets inserted. If I had to do it again I would opt for the 60qt if the dual zone is actually needed. I think most of the time I will just use it as a fridge so I can pull all of that out and not worry about it.

Weight is a bit of a concern, even when empty its not light... Not a problem for me as I lift, but I could see it being a problem for smaller people. Only other real downside is it is not great for insulation. You can feel the cold on the outside pretty obviously. Its price accurately reflects that though, and the additional cover helps. It wouldnt hurt to add your own either.

Overall I'm pretty impressed with it. It appears to be a great cooler and hopefully lasts a long time.
